Type: Adjustable Positive Linear Voltage Regulator (3-terminal)

Description: Adjustable positive linear regulator supplying more than 500 mA over a 1.2–37 V output range, with internal current limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensation.

Operating Conditions:

  • Input-output differential: up to 40 V (3.0 V ≤ VI − VO ≤ 40 V in the electrical characteristics)
  • Operating junction temperature: 0 to +125 °C (LM317M, LM317MA); −40 to +125 °C (LM317MB, LM317MAB, NCV parts) — grade-dependent
  • Output voltage range: 1.2 V to 37 V
  • Minimum load current: 3.5 mA typ, 10 mA max (VI − VO = 40 V)

Absolute Maximum Ratings:

  • Input-output voltage differential: 40 Vdc
  • Max junction temperature: +150 °C
  • Storage temperature: −65 to +150 °C
  • Power dissipation: internally limited (TA = 25 °C)

Key Specs:

  • Reference voltage: 1.25 V typ (1.20–1.30 V for LM317M/MB; 1.225–1.275 V for MA/MAB)
  • Line regulation: 0.01 %/V typ, 0.04 %/V max (TA = 25 °C, 3.0 V ≤ VI − VO ≤ 40 V)
  • Load regulation (10 mA ≤ IO ≤ 0.5 A, TA = 25 °C): 5.0 mV typ / 25 mV max for VO ≤ 5 V; 0.1 %VO typ / 0.5 %VO max for VO ≥ 5 V
  • Adjustment pin current: 50 μA typ, 100 μA max
  • Maximum output current: 0.5 A min (VI − VO ≤ 15 V); 0.15 A min (VI − VO = 40 V, TA = 25 °C)
  • Ripple rejection (VO = 10 V, 120 Hz): 65 dB typ without CAdj; 80 dB typ with CAdj = 10 μF
  • RMS noise: 0.003 %VO typ (10 Hz–10 kHz)
  • Thermal shutdown: 180 °C typ
  • Long-term stability: 0.3 %/1.0 kHrs typ, 1.0 max

Features:

  • Output current in excess of 500 mA
  • Output adjustable between 1.2 V and 37 V
  • Internal thermal overload protection
  • Internal short-circuit current limiting
  • Output transistor safe-area compensation
  • Floating operation for high-voltage applications
  • Pb-free devices
  • NCV prefix: AEC-Q100 qualified and PPAP capable

Applications:

  • Local on-card regulation
  • Adjustable switching regulator
  • Programmable output regulator
  • Precision current regulator

Package:

  • TO-220AB (T suffix, Case 221AB)
  • DPAK (DT suffix, Case 369C)
  • SOT-223 (ST suffix, Case 318E)

NCV317MAB Features

  • Output Current in Excess of 500 mA

  • Internal Thermal Overload Protection

  • Output Adjustable between 1.2 V and 37 V

  • Internal Short Circuit Current Limiting

  • Floating Operation for High Voltage Applications

  • Output Transistor Safe -Area Compensation

  • Eliminates Stocking Many Fixed Voltages

  • These are Pb -Free Devices

  • NCV Prefix for Automotive and Other Applications Requiring Unique Site and Control Change Requirements; AEC -Q100 Qualified and PPAP Capable

  • = C in is required if regulator is located an appreciable distance from power supply filter. ** = C O is not needed for stability, however, it does improve transient response.

$$V_{out} = 1.25\ V \left(1 + \frac{R_2}{R_1}\right) + I_{Adj}, R_2$$

Since I Adj is controlled to less than 100 m A, the error associated with this term is negligible in most applications.
