Overview
The TPS6120x devices provide a power supply solution for products powered by single-cell, 2-cell, or 3-cell alkaline, NiCd, or NiMH batteries, or single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer batteries. It is also used in fuel cell or solar cell powered devices, where the ability to handle low input voltages is crucial. The possible output current depends on the input to output voltage ratio. When using a single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer battery and discharging it down to 2.6V, the device provides up to 600mA output current at 5V output. This boost converter is based on a fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller that uses synchronous rectification to obtain maximum efficiency. Under low load current conditions, the converter enters power save mode to maintain high efficiency over a wide load current range. Power save mode can be disabled, forcing the converter to operate at a fixed switching frequency. The average input current is limited to a maximum of 1500mA. The output voltage can be programmed by an external resistor divider, or internally fixed on-chip. The converter can be disabled to significantly reduce battery consumption. During shutdown, the load is completely disconnected from the battery. The device is available in a 10-pin 3 mm x 3 mm VSON package.
